London Penthouse Bears Frank Gehry’s Signature Moderism

Battersea Power Station, a working coal-fired power station from about 1930 to 1980, is breathing new life into a section of London on the south bank of the Thames.

The often-filmed landmark with its four towering chimneys is being transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood where high-end shops, bars and restaurants are enjoyed by residents, locals, office workers and tourists. Even a pair of peregrine falcons are calling the 42-acre development home.

“Battersea Power Station is fast becoming one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in London,” says Watson Briggs of Chestertons, “attracting international buyers due to its rich history, world-class amenities and convenient location to central London.”

Framing the historic brick edifice are the Gehry Partners-designed Prospect Place and Foster + Partners’ Battersea Roof Gardens. The buildings were developed in collaboration and mirror one another with a shop-lined street in between. Residents of both structures have access to Roof Gardens facilities, which include picnic areas, a lounge, theater, co-working space and gym.

Prospect Place is the first such residential project in the United Kingdom by renowned architect Frank Gehry’s Los Angeles-based firm. The curved sculptural facade contrasts with the uniform design of the art deco power station.

The 308 homes emphasize open-concept floor plans and access to outdoor space. They include studios, one- to four-bedroom condominiums and luxury penthouses. Briggs describes them as “the perfect mix … ideal for those seeking a cosmopolitan lifestyle.”

The units have two interior themes. One is the L.A. palette, which features pale wooden finishes and a light color scheme. The London option draws from the historical elements of the adjacent power station and uses metal finishes and contrasting textures to achieve an industrial vibe.

Briggs is representing a brand new London-palette penthouse for sale on the 14th and 15th levels. Wood herringbone-patterned floors carry throughout most of the 3,073 square feet of living space, which includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms. A private elevator connects the two levels.

The terrace adds another 1,600 square feet of outdoor living space.

The asking price is GB £6.95 million or about US $8.7 million. Two parking spaces may be purchased separately, although Battersea has its own Underground tube station. The ride to the West End is less than 15 minutes.

“The neighborhood’s proximity to some of London’s top schools and universities makes it ideal for families whilst its prime location on the banks of the River Thames offers stunning views and a tranquil ambiance,” Briggs says. The development has a nursery, medical center, river bus service and a 100-plus voice community choir.

“Whether you are looking for a new home or a lucrative investment opportunity,” he says, “Battersea Power Station is a prime destination that truly has something for everyone.”
