Watch Now: Interest in AI is on the rise—here are 10 schools that offer undergraduate majors or minors in machine learning and AI.

The debut of ChatGPT in November created angst for college admission officers and professors worried they would be flooded by student essays written with the undisclosed assistance of artificial intelligence. But the explosion of interest in AI has benefits for higher education, including a new generation of students interested in studying and working in the field. In response, universities are revising their curriculums to educate AI engineers.
Some schools limit AI engineering education to graduate programs, but others have created undergraduate majors and minors for those keen to study the topic. Princeton University (#1 on Forbes’ 2023 America’s Top Colleges list), converted its popular certificate program in statistics and machine learning into a minor, beginning in fall 2023. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#4), undergraduates can work toward a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making within the engineering school. Alongside computer science and mathematics courses, the program also requires students to complete at least one class that addresses the “social and ethical responsibilities of computing.”
Meanwhile, computer and information science students at the University of Pennsylvania (#8) can concentrate in artificial intelligence, which includes classes like “deep learning for data science” and “computer vision & computational photography.” Penn students can also join AI@Penn, a student organization that partners with Wharton Business School’s AI for Business Initiative and coordinates speaker events featuring leading alumni and professors in AI.
