Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said it would be several weeks until he could return to work after being shot by an assailant towards whom he bore “no hatred.”
But Fico on Wednesday also used his first speech since being attacked last month to describe the shooter as a “messenger of evil and political hatred, which the politically unsuccessful and frustrated opposition has developed in Slovakia to unmanageable proportions”.
Fico said in a speech posted on social media that it would be “a small miracle if I return to work in several weeks”. He was shot in the abdomen at point-blank range three weeks ago as he greeted supporters. “I forgive him,” Fico said of the assailant.
Slovakia’s government initially attributed the attack to a “lone wolf” assailant who had a “political motivation” but did not belong to a specific political group. The 61-year-old suspect was charged with attempted murder, although the authorities later said the investigation had not ruled out that he may have been assisted.
