Composer Stephen Sondheim’s former NYC townhouse hits the market for $7 million

The lovely New York City townhouse of the late Stephen Sondheim, revered Broadway composer and lyricist, has just been listed for $7 million, according to Architectural Digest.

Set in the historic East Side district of Turtle Bay Gardens, the beautiful seven-bedroom, 3.5-bath home has more than 5,690 square feet.

Here’s an inside look at where the musical-theater legend lived from 1960 until 2021, when he passed away at the age of 91.

Sondheim’s estate is selling the property.

Built in 1899, Sondheim’s townhouse is in a collection of homes once owned by equally famous people, including actress Katharine Hepburn, author E.B. White, and editor and writer Robert Gottlieb. The homes share a private, communal garden.

Serene space

The 19-foot-wide building is accessed via a wrought-iron gate and features a paneled foyer with a lofty, blue-tiled ceiling that leads to a 32-foot living room.

Prewar details—wood floors with chevron patterns and mahogany inlays, period moldings, and French doors—abound throughout the space. Modern touches have been added, too—notably, a first-floor, stainless steel kitchen with glass-front cabinets and an eight-burner, professional range.

Naturally, there’s a gorgeous music room with a wood-burning fireplace and space for a baby grand piano.

The townhouse also boasts a solarium with stained-glass windows and access to a 30-foot terrace overlooking the gardens. Additional fireplaces are found in the home office and bedrooms.

There’s even a second kitchen with Sub-Zero and Miele appliances on the third floor.

The main bedroom suite spans the entire fourth floor and offers built-ins, yet another fireplace, and an en suite bath with a soaking tub and separate shower.

The fifth and top floor is a studio apartment with its own kitchenette and terrace. The basement is finished and comes with lots of storage and the home’s laundry area.

Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for more than a dozen Broadway shows. He won multiple awards, including eight Tonys, in his storied career. Among his most celebrated works are “West Side Story,” “Gypsy,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Into the Woods,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Sunday in the Park With George.”

Michael J. Franco of Compass holds the listing.

This story was originally published on Realtor.com, a real estate and rentals site. In addition to homes for sale, you can find rentals like Scottsdale apartments, Austin apartments, Tampa apartments, and more.
