Vice President Kamala Harris and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, one of the Republicans running for president in 2024, joined New Yorkers at a 9/11 memorial ceremony at ground zero Monday.
The solemn ceremony in lower Manhattan was the focus of the hourslong reading of the names of the people who perished from the September 11 attack.
Other current and former political figures were at the ceremony, including both New York senators — Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand — as well as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. The city’s current mayor, Eric Adams, was joined by former New York City mayors Mike Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani.
No speeches by the aforementioned political figures were made.
Biden is scheduled to mark the day of remembrance this evening at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska. Biden’s speech can be streamed on the White House’s YouTube channel.
Former president Donald Trump, a former New Yorker, did not attend Monday’s ceremony but instead released a brief video statement talking about the attacks.

It’s been 22 years since the hijacked plane attacks claimed nearly 3,000 lives and upended American foreign policy and national security.
Since the attack, over 71,000 people have been diagnosed with physical or mental health conditions after being exposed to the dust, smoke, debris and trauma of the 9/11 attacks, according to the World Trade Center Health Program.
